Fredrik Gustafsson has been a professor in Sensor Informatics at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University, since 2005. He received his M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering in 1988 and his Ph.D. degree in Automatic Control in 1992, both from Linköping University. He is the author of five books and over 600 scientific papers, several of which have received best paper awards.

As an entrepreneur, Fredrik Gustafsson is a co-founder of several companies. He co-founded NIRA Dynamics, which focuses on automotive safety, including tire pressure monitoring systems found in about 100 million cars today. NIRA Dynamics was acquired by a joint venture of VAG and Porsche. He also co-founded Softube, which develops plug-ins used in tens of thousands of music studios, and Senion, which specializes in indoor navigation for smartphones and is deployed in more than 30 countries across all six continents. Senion was acquired by Verizon.

In 2014, Fredrik Gustafsson initiated Project Ngulia, which aims to develop innovative and cost-effective technical tools for park rangers in the Ngulia rhino sanctuary in Kenya. This project has since scaled to other parks in Kenya and South Africa. The spin-off company Qulinda is working to bring these solutions back to cow farmers and researchers in Europe.
